Ubuntu Edge crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo

Canonical, company behind the most popular Linux distro Ubuntu, is running a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to fund a new smartphone called Edge. With a whopping funding goal of $32 million making it the most ambitious crowdfunding project till date.

Ubuntu Edge

This phone is supposed to run the full-blown Ubuntu OS. Apart from this the Edge will dual-boot in Android too. Mark Shuttleworth the company’s founder is calling this concept ‘convergence’. He also did an AMA on Reddit to answer netizens’ questions about this awesome new phone (should call it a concept as of now). Proposed to run on a powerful multi-core processor with 4GB RAM and a whopping 128GB of in-built storage this phone concept seems to be very appealing. It will also have a sapphire crystal instead of glass in front of the screen. Mark also said that if this campaign is successfully funded it will become an annual affair.

Though this seems to be a great concept, already demonstrated on a Google Nexus 4, many technology enthusiasts are skeptical about the success of this campaign.

P.S.: I made a simple twitter bot @CrowdfundBot to track the funding status of this campaign using Google Apps script.

  1. Very ambitious project but it will be interesting to see how far does this campaign get funded because of its huge goal setting this looks unrealistic but you never know with effective marketing anything can happen.
